Political Campaign Techstacks

One of the hardest parts of early independent political campaigning can be trying to punch above your weight against the major parties. The explosion of the nocode movement has meant that ordinary people can now build and execute powerful web communities and campaign strategies, previously only available to those with mammoth budgets.

Looking for the right technology for your political campaign?

The challenge can be figuring out which tools to use. It's no secret that a lot of time (and opportunity) is often wasted building with the wrong tools. It can be a huge momentum killer. Avoid that and save a ton of time by getting started with the right tools from the get go.

What are the best Political Digital Organising Tools?

That depends on a couple of factors:

  1. Campaign type : What kind of campaign are you running - is it a federal political campaign or a local community movement?
  2. Budget: It can be easy to assume that you need to use specialist political tools if you’re running a political campaign. There are obviously electoral laws on how you store data and whether you fundraise on your own site or link to an alternate platform - but the topline is, there are plenty of great digital tools built by and for the startup tech community, that can offer you great capability at affordable prices so don’t be afraid to try something outside of the standard political tools like Nationbuilder or ActiveCampaign.
  3. The tech capability of your team : technology is changing so fast but it can be overwhelming to someone whose experience with tech is limited. Taking into account how comfortable (and experienced) your team is, will mean you select tools that can be managed easily and effectively. In the tool database below, you’ll see I’ve noted the skill level required to give you a quick sense of which tools require a more sophisticated understanding or someone to help from a tech background. Each tool has been categorised in terms of:

Although there are digital tools developed specifically for political and social-cause campaigning, there are also a bunch of free or low cost tools developed for startups which can also be easily used by political or activist campaign groups. Don’t discount a tool just because it’s promoted ‘for startups’, this is often where you’ll find the most innovative (and cost effective) tools around.
